Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Tip #17…DO THIS TODAY:

Re-label something in your life.

I once heard a story…
Carly Simon has done very few live performances in her life…even at the height of her career. When asked once by an interviewer, “why?”, she said that she had a horrible case of stage fright. She described it as standing in the wings right before her name was announced, getting a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach, breaking out in a cold sweat, her hands going clammy, and an overwhelming sense of nerves engulfing her. A number of years later, an interviewer asked Bruce Springsteen what he most enjoyed about performing. His response had to do with the exhilaration he felt just before his name was announced. He described it as getting a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach, breaking out in a cold sweat, his hands going clammy, and an overwhelming sense of nerves engulfing him.

While their words were actually not exactly the same, their experiences were. So, why did one of them choose to label the physiological response as “terror” while the other labeled the exact same response as “excitement?” Fascinating, no?

With your new-found awareness of our obsessive labeling, it is interesting to discover that includes our own emotions and responses. You have to take the labels off of everything and really get down to the foundation of what it is you are really experiencing. If you think about it, physically we respond in almost an identical way to being nervous and being excited. When you are really scared about something, the feeling is pretty much the same as when you are really motivated about something. Are you getting in your own way because of how you are labeling your feelings?

It has been said that the coward and the hero have the same fear. The only difference is that one chooses to take action. You choose every day how you label what you feel and whether you choose to take action or not because of it.

Choose wisely and never let a mis-labeled response keep you from greatness.

Until tomorrow…
