But, I Didn’t Want to Go to Philadelphia!

Filed under: Making Decisions,Motivation,Stress Management,Take Control — Robin Sacks...Speaker, Author, Performance Coach @ 6:16 pm

Imagine you woke up this morning, got in your car, drove to the airport, parked, took a shuttle to the terminal, checked in at the counter, got a boarding pass, checked your luggage, went through security, got to the gate, boarded a plane, flew for a couple of hours and landed. Upon landing, the pilot’s voice booms over the speakers and says, “welcome to Philadelphia!” You turn to the person sitting next to you and say, “but, I didn’t want to go to Philadelphia.” He asks, “where did you want to go?” You think for a moment and say, “I don’t know.” My questions to you go something like this: why did you get in your car, drive to the airport, park, take a shuttle to the terminal, check in at the counter, get a boarding pass, check your luggage, go through security, go to the gate and board a plane?

The strange thing is this is how most people in our society go through their lives…and do not realize it! We do things because we are “supposed to” or we think we “should” yet we never really stop to think WHY we are doing what we are doing or where it is we are even trying to go. We are just “going through the motions.”

Not to confuse a very simple concept, but what if we knew we wanted to go to Seattle? It is completely the opposite way of Philadelphia, right? Yet, what would you have done to get there? You would have woken up this morning, got in your car, driven to the airport, parked, took a shuttle to the terminal, checked in at the counter, got a boarding pass, checked your luggage, went through security, got to the gate, boarded a plane, flew for a couple of hours and landed.

The lesson here is this: If you choose to do things in your life without thinking about WHERE you are actually trying to go and WHY are you doing what you are doing to get there, you can be deceiving yourself into thinking you are on the right course when, in reality, you are so far off course that you are heading in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, too many people do not realize that until it is too late to turn around.

Knowing the WHERE is so much more important than knowing the HOW! Get clarity on the WHERE, take ACTION, and the HOW will appear.

Step out of your life today for just a few minutes and ask yourself if you need to change planes.

Get clarity! Get inspired! Get moving!

“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. “Which road do I take?” she asked. “Where do you want to go?” was his response. “I don’t know,” Alice answered. “Then,” said the cat, “it doesn’t matter.”” — Lewis Carroll, author —
